Below is a table providing information on the maximum number of sockets allowed for most weapons in the game.

Some Horadric Cube recipes will place sockets on items (though special recipes are needed to socket magic, rare and unique items without erasing their former powers). Very special recipes will allow up to five sockets in a magic item and as many as 3 in a rare or unique (if the base item allows for that many).

There are more than 40 new items that can be placed into sockets, classified generally as gems, glyphs and talismans. All of these items are considered “gems” for purposes of the game (thus, if a Horadric Cube recipe calls for any type of gem, you could use a glyph or talisman if you wanted).
